Cylindrical and ultra-resistant design

In order to manufacture this equip, Salher uses a GRP with isoltalic resin, which prevents corrosion and protects against UV radiation, providing the equip with total chemical and mechanical resistance to any type of adverse situation. All the metallic elements of the equipment are made of AISI 316 stainless steel.

When we talk about customised cylindrical design, we mean that its height can be designed to meet the needs of each client. Vespa also has a levelling system with adjustable legs for cases where the floor is uneven.

Vespa includes an adjustable clarified water collector so that the equip can easily adapt to changes in the loads and flow rates of the incoming water, and incorporates a transparent cover to reduce the escape of possible odours generated by the process and make it easier to visually check the inside of the unit. The sliding section facilitates maintenance work.

This DAF is a compact solution that meets the international dimensions of maritime containers, for shipment to any location in the world, and can even be adapted to existing treatment plants.

Flocculation system

The Vespa system has a flocculation pipe to achieve the chemical conditioning of the water made of thermo-welded HDPE, which offers greater resistance to chemical deterioration. Its structure is made of painted steel with C5-M corrosion protection (maritime protection grade) and has a levelling system.

Top brand panel board

The Electrical Department of Salher supplies Vespa fully automated by means of a SIEMENS PLC with colour touch screen. In addition, for remote visualisation and control of the installation, the control equipment of the treatment plant offers the option of a remote station with SCADA or GSM.

The programming of the panel board and the dynamic interface of the different screens facilitate the understanding and correct use by the operators in the plant.

Polyelectrolyte preparation system

Vespa includes an automatic system for the continuous polyelectrolyte preparation (UAP) and the addition of flocculant, coagulant and pH control and regulation.

This system consists of a hopper, an AISI 316 dosing auger, an agitator and a conditioning tank manufactured using the filament winding system, using isophthalic resin and glass fibre. This technique improves the mechanical and chemical properties of the tanks manufactured using conventional systems.

Salher ultrafiltration compact water treatment plants

The ultrafiltration membranes used by Salher have a pore size < 0.1 micron, allowing the removal of suspended solids, organic matter, turbidity, pathogenic microorganisms and certain metals. In addition, they allow a low and consistent sediment density index (SDI) to be achieved.

One of the simplest equipment for this purpose within the Salher catalogue is the rainwater recovery system (RAP) for its reuse in irrigation of ornamental plants; a rainwater storage tank made of GFRP. It can be vertical or horizontal and includes a filter with a polyamide structure resistant to high pressures that will allow to retain those typical roof solids, such as tree leaves.

Likewise, the RAP has a baffle at the inlet of the storage tank to retain sand particles, typical on covers or roofs. This tank can be fitted with a submersible pump with floating suction performing the cleaner water suction for sprinkler irrigation.

For those cases in which it is foreseen that rainwater can be stored for a long time in the RAP tank, Salher has developed a complementary equipment to conserve the recovered water: the SAL-PLU. This equipment has a compact structure and manual measurement, allowing simple and accessible maintenance of rainwater.

In car parks, garages and other cases where rainwater presents traces of hydrocarbons and sand, it will be necessary to study solutions for the separation of hydrocarbons from water. Salher has extensive experience in the design and manufacture of hydrocarbon separators and currently has different models sized in accordance with UNE-EN 858 standard in tariffs.

For those areas of intense rain in short periods of time, hydrocarbon separators with a flow bypass device are the most interesting alternative. In addition, Salher offers specific accessories for the separation of hydrocarbons such as detection alarms for hydrocarbons, sand and solids and maximum levels, sampling manholes or even pedestrian folding cover with cut-out extension.

For reuse with more demanding destinations, such as flushing in toilets, irrigation of green areas by sprinkling or dripping, there are more advanced systems that allow meeting the most restrictive requirements of the R.D. 1620/2007. These systems can be physical-chemical or physical. To guarantee the maximum health conditions, Salher recommends its equipment by filtration with high efficiency MBR-AUT membranes.

Along with rainwater, the study of the reuse of gray water is recommended due to its regular flow and that allow a constant reuse and therefore more effective in the use of resources.

What is a pumping station and what is it for?

A pumping station is an equip used to raise a flow to a higher height. To do this, the pumping station must have a holding tank (in our case, an outer structure made of GFRP) and a boost system aided by the necessary electrical instrumentation (level measurement systems or level regulators, protection panel board and command).

What is reuse, from a technical point of view?

Salher’s compact reuse plants offer countless configurations to meet any required water quality or intended use. They are a set of refining elements for the treatment of grey water from showers, bathtubs and sinks and domestic and industrial wastewater previously treated.

In a first stage, this treatment includes a sand filter system or an ultrafiltration system. In the latter case, if the reuse of water were immediate, this first phase would be sufficient. However, most of the time this water is not reused immediately and is accumulated in a tank.

Therefore, a second stage is necessary for its subsequent reuse. This consists of a disinfection system, a maintenance chlorination, which can be by hypochlorite, ozone or ultraviolet radiation.

In those cases in which the water was not first subjected to a treatment process, there is the option of supplying a membrane bioreactor (MBR), which will combine both technologies: active sludge and ultrafiltration.

The waters regenerated by these processes can be used as refill of toilet tanks, irrigation (agricultural, green areas and golf courses), sewer cleaning, street washing, fire systems, industrial vehicle washing, industrial processes or aquifers recharging and regeneration of rivers and wetlands.

Reuse as a paradigm of the circular economy

The implementation of a water reuse system implies an important initial economic investment, which is amortized over the years in those facilities where high grey water consumption is generated. Thus, places where it would be interesting to install a reuse plant, since a large amount of water is consumed and easily reusable waters are generated, are hotels, gyms and car washes.

Beyond the ecological aspect and long-term money savings, another incentive that motivates many companies to install Salher water reuse systems is to obtain sustainable labels and certifications for their buildings. In Spain, there is the LEED certification, the BREEAM and the green label, which also allow the saving of taxes such as the IBI (LVT) in Spain.

Reuse of water in Europe

The water stress suffered by some countries in southern Europe, such as Cyprus, Spain, France, Greece, Italy or Portugal, leads them to establish their own legislation on reuse. For example, in Spain, the Royal Decree 1620/2007 was drafted to increase water resources. This regulates the permits for the reuse of treated water, which due to lack of investment amounts to only 10.4% in the country.

For its part, the European Commission is in the process of approving a community regulation focused on agricultural irrigation to encourage the use of reclaimed water safely for the environment. In the end, water reuse is an easier and more reliable practice than transfers or desalination.

The predictions say that, with a European regulation, the volume of reused water will increase to 6,600 million m³ per year in 2025, from the current 1,100 million.
