The dairy industry generates a large quantity of process water highly contaminated with organic matter (BOD and COD) that biodegrades slowly as well as nitrogen and phosphorus, detergents, acid, oils and greases.

Wastewater is generated through:

  • The manufacturing process.
  • Cleaning of tanks, equipment and installations, surfaces (floors, walls), leaks and spills. Periodic drainage operations. These operations represent the largest part of water consumption in order to guarantee the required hygiene and quality conditions.
  • Sanitary uses.

There are several treatment options depending on the defined strategy, the type of project (wastewater removal, reuse) and the discharge of treated water.

Pumping solutions upstream from the plant

According to the flow, we recommend installing a prefabricated pumping station or a civil engineering structure.

Salher® tanks are manufactured in GFRP according to the Filament Winding method and have the following advantages.

  • Complete waterproofness and corrosion resistance,
  • High isothermal resistance to changes in temperature,
  • High chemical and mechanical resistance enables underground installation in many circumstances (deepness, water-table, etc),

The installation of a screening system for coarse, fine and non-putrescible solids is necessary. Salher recommends a rotary drum sieve with automatic cleaning and an opening size lower than 3mm, such as the Salher brand TA-RO.

Advanced primary treatments

  • Equalization tanks, to control flow and pH

  • Polyelectrolyte preparation plant to optimize the separation processes between the solid-liquid phases. This is a prior stage for the purification of wastewater by physicochemical treatment.

  • Dissolved Air Flotation (DAF) to separate the greases by flotation using a micro bubbles diffusion.

Conventional secondary treatments

  • Activated sludge treatment (aerobics) with nitrification-denitrification and clarification process

  • Treatment through moving bed or MBBR system (aerobics). Compact technology with lower energy consumption than activated sludge treatment; stable for the BOD / COD and nitrogen removal. The addition of iron salts (iron chloride) is necessary in order to chemically remove the phosphorus.

Sludge conditionning

Once the water has been purified for discharge, we recommend to treat the sludge.

There are several possibilities:

  • Stabilization
  • Thickening
  • Dehydration

Tertiary treatments

Greywater from showers and sinks can be recycled and reused. Tertiary equipment with ultrafiltration system (membranes), chemicals (chlorination) and UV disinfection can be installed

Compact container solution

This solution will be customized to meet the requirements of the customer and the environment in which the WWTP will be installed.

Compact and containerized Salher® WWTP can treat a flow of 150 m³/day, equivalent to the level of contamination generated by a city of 82,000 inhabitants.

One of the main advantages is the reduced space in which the different treatment and control equipment are housed to enable comfortable use and supervision by the technical staff.

The 40-foot container is thermally insulated and perfectly adapted to the climate of the site.
