Global water crisis? Discover the game-changing solutions in water management
Human activity is leaving an indelible mark on the planet’s water resources, jeopardizing their future quality and availability. Salher’s experts present the most effective solutions to counter the challenges of the water crisis across urban, industrial, and drinking water sectors.
Pollution from intensive agriculture, industrial discharges, and urban expansion is transforming rivers, lakes, and oceans into damaged ecosystems incapable of sustaining their natural biodiversity. Compounding these issues is the impact of climate change, which disrupts water cycles, triggering extreme phenomena such as prolonged droughts and devastating floods.
Recently, the term “hydroclimatic whiplash” has gained traction in the media. This concept refers to sudden extreme weather events, such as California’s wildfires or Valencia’s flash floods, and is poised to become increasingly common. In a global context where water access grows ever more uncertain, adopting integrated solutions like those from Salher is essential to mitigate these effects.
The Urban Water Reuse Challenge
UNESCO reports reveal that 80% of wastewater worldwide is discharged untreated, while its reuse could meet up to 50% of urban water demand. Despite this potential, only about 2% of treated water is currently reused globally. Given these statements, one might believe that, globally, all cities and urban centres would be committed to implementing solutions for reuse. However, it is currently estimated that barely 2% of treated water is reused.
To address water treatment needs for small to medium-sized communities, tourist resorts, and modular camps, Salher offers tailored solutions that prioritize water reuse systems for green space irrigation or toilet tank refills whenever possible.
The basic WWTP that Salher recommends to its customers consists of five phases: pretreatment to remove coarse solids, sand and grease and thus protect the downstream equipment; primary treatment to reduce the organic load of the water; secondary treatment which includes reactors in which the purification itself takes place; tertiary treatment which includes more specific filters for water reuse and the treatment of sludge generated during the water purification process.
All phases can be controlled through a PLC-equipped electrical panel to ensure continuous and efficient operation, with remote control and automation options available.
The following video provides a detailed explanation of Salher’s urban water treatment solutions:
Dissolved Air Flotation for Industrial Wastewater: A Winning Approach
Modern industries, while indispensable, consume large quantities of clean water and produce significant wastewater. Treating this wastewater is non-negotiable. At Salher, we have extensively analyzed the efficiency of our industrial wastewater treatment systems, and the conclusion is clear: dissolved air flotation (DAF) units are a cornerstone of industrial WWTPs.
DAF systems utilize flotation technology to remove 50–80% of BOD5, 60–80% of COD, and up to 90% of suspended solids, oils, and grease. By dissolving air into the water, microbubbles form, which adhere to contaminants, making them float to the surface for efficient removal.
Salher studies each solution according to the origin of the water to be treated, the pollutant loads, the discharge limits and the energy requirements. Salher currently has two DAF system models: the Vespa Dissolved Air Flotation unit, which is very compact due to its cylindrical shape, ideal in situations where there is not much space available for installation, and Xcorpio, the DAF for large flow rates, designed to facilitate transport in shipping containers.
Efficiency in Drinking Water Treatment: An Urgent Priority
Nearly 3 billion people—half the global population—live in areas affected by water scarcity, jeopardizing food security and causing the deaths of approximately 1,000 children daily. From Salher’s perspective, sustainable water management is not only a technical challenge but also an ethical imperative.
Salher’s drinking water treatment systems are compact and adaptable to various environments. In regions with severe water shortages, technologies like reverse osmosis eliminate salts and contaminants from brackish or seawater, transforming it into potable water. Additionally, Salher’s advanced ozone generation technology, refined over the past year, ensures effective disinfection without chemical residues, delivering safe, high-quality drinking water.
To maximize the efficiency of its systems, Salher collaborates closely with governments, institutions, and private companies, offering technical consulting and support throughout project implementation. From small municipalities to large industrial complexes, the adaptability of Salher’s solutions addresses a wide range of needs.
In a World Where Access to Drinking Water is a Fundamental Right, but not always a reality...
