How to eliminate the chlorine smell in swimming pools? Salher introduces new ozone water treatment solutions

Jul 15, 2026

The characteristic chlorine smell in swimming pools, irritated eyes and dry skin are no longer unavoidable. Ozonation is rapidly becoming the preferred water treatment technology for facilities where water quality is a key priority. With the launch of Salher O3, Salher introduces a new range of ozone generators designed for swimming pools, spas, fitness centres and wellness facilities.

Ozone (O₃) is one of the most powerful disinfectants available. Its biocidal capacity is significantly higher than that of chlorine, and the World Health Organization recognizes ozone as one of the most effective disinfectants for eliminating microorganisms from water. It acts through direct oxidation, destroying bacteria, viruses and other pathogens while removing organic matter and unwanted compounds. Once the process is complete, ozone naturally decomposes back into oxygen, leaving no chemical residues in the treated water.

Rather than replacing chlorination, ozone complements it by significantly reducing the amount of chlorine required while improving the overall sanitary quality of the water. For this reason, Salher recommends ozone treatment for swimming pools, spas and sports facilities.

Superior water quality and crystal-clear appearance.

By oxidizing organic matter and enhancing the coagulation and flocculation process, ozone significantly improves water clarity and filtration performance. The result is visibly cleaner, crystal-clear water free from colour and turbidity, an essential factor in facilities where users’ perception of quality plays a decisive role.

Healthier indoor environments.

Many of the discomforts associated with indoor swimming pools, including the characteristic chlorine smell, eye irritation and respiratory discomfort, are not caused by chlorine itself but by chloramines, compounds formed when chlorine reacts with organic matter introduced by bathers. Because ozonation reduces chlorine demand, it also significantly reduces chloramine formation, improving indoor air quality. This represents a direct benefit for competitive swimmers, athletes, regular users of heated pools and facility staff alike.

Greater comfort in spas and wellness facilities.

In spas, jacuzzis, hydrotherapy pools and thermal circuits, where users remain in contact with warm water for extended periods, reducing residual chemicals creates a noticeably more comfortable experience for both the skin and the respiratory system. In these environments, water quality is an essential part of the overall customer experience.

Enhanced health protection.

Ozone is particularly effective against microorganisms that show greater resistance to conventional chlorination and does not generate disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes (THMs), some of which are classified as potentially carcinogenic. These characteristics make ozone an ideal solution for facilities operating under strict sanitary regulations and for applications with high organic loads, such as water parks.

Operational savings and sustainability.

Lower chemical consumption, reduced deterioration of surfaces and equipment caused by prolonged chlorine exposure, and the elimination of chemical storage and handling requirements all contribute to lower operating costs and improved efficiency. In addition, ozone offers clear environmental benefits. It is generated on-site from oxygen and naturally decomposes back into oxygen after completing the disinfection process, leaving no harmful residues.

Compliance with health regulations.

Spain’s Royal Decree 742/2013, which establishes the technical and health standards for swimming pools, explicitly recognizes ozone as an approved disinfection method. When combined with a minimal chlorine dosage to provide the required residual disinfectant in the pool, ozone treatment fully complies with current regulatory requirements while significantly improving water quality.

The new Salher O3 range

With more than 40 years of experience in water treatment engineering and projects delivered worldwide, Salher brings its expertise in ozonation together under Salher O3, a specialist division dedicated to the design, manufacture and installation of ozone generation systems for both water and air treatment.

The new water treatment range comprises three models: OZW Max, OZW Pro y OZW Core, designed to cover every application, from professional leisure facilities to large-scale industrial water treatment.

All models share the same design philosophy: in-house manufacturing, integrated oxygen concentrators, remote monitoring and control systems, and comprehensive safety features that ensure reliable, autonomous operation in full compliance with applicable standards.

With a total production capacity of up to 2,000 g O₃/h, the range is suitable for applications ranging from boutique spas and competition swimming pools to large hotel complexes and water parks.

Beyond supplying the equipment itself, Salher O3 provides a complete turnkey service, including engineering and technical consultancy, feasibility studies and pilot testing carried out in its R&D laboratory, installation and commissioning, as well as after-sales maintenance and technical support with both national and international coverage. This comprehensive approach ensures that every installation, whether a boutique spa, an Olympic swimming pool or a large aquatic leisure complex, receives a solution precisely engineered to meet its operational requirements.
