How to Remove Odors and Polluting Gases at Wastewater Treatment Plants?

Apr 8, 2022

In a wastewater treatment plant, unpleasant odours are generated, which can also be polluting and dangerous for the health of the plant operators. To effectively eliminate these toxic gases, Salher designs specific deodorisation accessories for wastewater treatment plants.

The odour-producing gases are generated at different stages of the treatment process and their generation depends on the composition of the wastewater and the environmental conditions of the treatment process.  One of the main problems in the elimination of odours in infrastructures of this type is that the substances that produce them are diverse and require different treatments.

For this reason, among its catalogue of deodorisation accessories, Salher has the CARBO-VENT model, which is a filter in charge of the treatment of polluting gases from the ventilation of WWTP and septic tanks, such as hydrogen sulfide, methane and other annoying gases.

This filter, which works continuously with long service times, is filled with different types of granules with specific functions depending on each need, their color change depending on the degree of depletion.

The CARBO-VENT operates from -10 to 50°C and it is installed at the outlet of the ventilation line in a vertical, horizontal or angle arrangement. In addition, it allows connecting several equipment in parallel to neutralise larger volumes of pollutants.

Salher has recently commissioned a water treatment plant in an agri-food industry where high volumes of toxic gases were being generated. As a result, the installation includes the design and installation of a deodorisation line for the building in which the WWTP is located. This line has a CARBO-VENT equipment, filled with one ton of activated carbon, for the chemical adsorption of odours.

CARBO-SAC filters

Another of the Salher equipment that offers greater performance in terms of odour elimination is the CARBO-SAC. This is a filter to treat polluting gases, such as hydrogen sulphide, mercaptans or volatile organic compounds (VOC’s), from sewage treatment plants and pumping stations, ideal for installation inside machine sheds.

This filter is designed to continuously treat flows of 328 to 768 m³/h. Three different types of granules with specific functions operate inside to obtain the highest efficiency and longest useful life, these granules can be changed depending on the gases present.

Salher’s engineers study in each case the most suitable solution for treating urban and industrial wastewater and also the toxic gases and unpleasant odours generated in wastewater treatment plants, in order to reduce the possibilities of polluting the environment as much as possible.
